Perfectionist Much?

I always thought Perfectionism meant I always thought it just meant I have high standards. I wore it as a badge of excellence. However, as I progressed in my career the more I realized how paralyzing and unproductive it could become. The time that I spent writing internal emails, spending time and energy on the minutia drained me of what I actually needed to focus on more complex tasks.

Reading Andrew Hill's research on perfectionism, here are a few highlights that caught my attention:

-Perfectionism isn't a behavior. It's a way of thinking about yourself. It is a critical inner voice.

-Give yourself a change to enjoy the process of being human

-Perfectionists beat themselves up for anything that appears to be lacking, and lose the satisfaction and pride from all things they do well.

Do these resonate with you like they are with me? Man, when I realized these traits I knew I had to do something different. So I am working on changing my self talk shifting it from blaming to appreciation. Also, I ask myself will this matter in 5 days, 5 months or 5 years? If not, then I limit the time I spend working on it and/or thinking about it.
